Surviving Your Serengeti, written by Stephan Swanepoel, is an improvement book. The book draws comparisons between the wild life of the Serengeti in Africa and the mainstream, modern lives of men and women in the work force. Much like an inservice at work, he maintains there are 7 steps to having a successful professional life. While most of us flail around taking baby steps as they are presented to us, Mr Swanepoel decribes the characteristics of nature gone wild and informs us how it's a jungle out there in the business world. Survival of the fittest, some will get chewed up and spit out alive. According to this book, that is where we pick up, dust ourselves off and begin again.
The book is focused on improving our over all work abilities, that of our team and making us ready for the cut throat world of work. Set in the Serengeti over the course of 3 days, Ashley and Sean take safari and get more than they expected. Their guide, Zacharia, maneuvers them through the wild on an adventure. The story line is definitely not best seller romance or fiction and the pages don't turn real fast, but there are the basics of professionalism here. Seven animals are observed and their natural instincts are colorfully brought to life as lessons to be learned. The wildebeest, the lion, the crocodile, the cheetah, the giraffe, the mongoose, and the elephant have survived in nature by utilizing instinctual skills learned through their experience. In short, these animal adaptations are translated and interpreted as skills the every day working man or woman can utilize professionally to be successful.
It is an uplifting and quick read. His point of view is optimistic and inspiring. He at least encourages us to think about our own personal serengeti, what we want from it. His theory pushes you to think about our professional goals and make a plan to get to that goal.
