Historic Gettysburg-Lincoln Square and The Wills House

If you happen upon historic Gettysburg, Pa, you are bound to hear about Abraham Lincoln. He is a mainstay for that town. It is a town that is still entrenched in the battlefield. Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg address there. The actual landmark is now covered with something like a building, but there is a museum there that recently opened inside of the David Wills House. David Wills is responsible for the Soldier's cemetery there and he wrote Abe a letter inviting him to this place. Abe accepted and the rest is all history. For 18$ me and the 3 kids went in and stepped back in time to the late 1800's.
Below, the bed where Abe slept, the room where Abe put the finishing touches on the Gettysburg address. It is wired with security. Touch or try to remove anything and an alarm will sound. We didn't attempt it.

The town map is right by Lincoln Square. It shows historic downtown and it's all within walking distance. It's all a circle and you can walk in a circle for some time, depending on what you'd like to see. Try parking and getting out of that traffic circle. That can be a harrying experience. No one stops, so it's risky and you gotta move quick.

Fun facts or fiction!!!


The old train station where Abe arrived on the eve of the Gettysburg address. If you visit I'd skip it unless you want a pic of it. It's dull on the inside. Nothing of interest here other than the outside of this landmark.



All this historic stuff did hold my kids' attention. It is fast moving. Most tours are self guided and for the 4 of us (1 adult and 3 kids 10 and under) the tours rounded out at 20$ give or take. Some exhibits are totally free like the battlefield itself, the cemetery.

There is metered parking, so take some change. In Gettysburg around the battlefield and other attractions, there's free parking. There's plenty to see and do and I'd say take a good 2-3days for a basic quick self guided investigation.
